DEAD RIVER TOWNSHIP — Maine game wardens and rescue officials from around western Maine carried a 64-year-old Hebron man 1.5 miles out of the woods on Wednesday after he was injured hiking the Appalachian Trail in Somerset County.

Cpl. John MacDonald said in a news release that John Jutras injured his knee and dislocated his thumb while hiking around 1:30 p.m., more than a mile west of East Flagstaff Road, and wasn’t able to continue.

More than 20 people, including personnel from Carrabassett Valley Fire and Rescue, NorthStar Ambulance, New Portland Fire and Rescue, Maine Forest Service, Eustis Fire and Rescue and Franklin Search and Rescue, helped carry Jutras to a waiting ambulance.

He was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington for treatment.
