BYRON — The Maine Warden Service and Franklin County emergency responders were sent to the scene of an all-terrain vehicle accident Saturday afternoon near Byron.
A state police dispatcher in Gray said the accident happened on an ATV trail in Township 6 North of Weld, northeast of Byron. Initial reports were that two people involved were found unresponsive, prompting a call for a LifeFlight medical helicopter.
NorthStar Ambulance sent two ambulances to the scene.
Michael Worthley, president of the Roxbury ATV Riders Club, said the accident happened on Stockbridge Road. That road is an ATV trail that leaves Weld Road in Byron just west of Tumbledown Mountain and travels north toward Route 4 and Madrid.
Calls to the warden service were not returned late Saturday.
Update:
Worthley posted Saturday night on the club’s Facebook site that he closed the Stockbridge Road ATV trail following the accident.
“We had a bad ATV accident today on the Stockbridge Road,” he wrote. “Again, not sure how bad. There was two people, and yes, they hit a water bar, but not the same ones as earlier this year. It was from the Madrid side.
“So for everyone’s safety, we are CLOSING this trail till further notice. Roxbury ATV Riders want you to stay out till we can get in grade the road and put rubber water bars in. Sorry for this, but we just need to make it safe.”
