Oak Hill rolls

WINTHROP — Oak Hill picked up two victories in a Babe Ruth doubleheader.

In Game 1, Oak Hill topped Winthrop 11-9. Oak Hill’s Kaleb Morisset went 4-for-4, scored four runs and stole two bases. Casey Dion was the winning pitcher and had the go-ahead RBI in the top of the seventh inning. For Winthrop, jackson Ladd went 3-for-4, scored three runs and stole two bases.

In Game 2, Reid Cote went 2-for-4, tripled and scored two runs, leading Oak Hill to a 16-13 victory over Monmouth. Kyle Laberge also went 2-for-4 and scored three runs. Colby Webster was the winning pitcher. For Monmouth, Hunter Richardson went 3-for-4 and scored four runs. He pitched 2/3 innings and struckout five batters.

The championship game will be played tomorrow at Oak Hill at 5:30 p.m.

Charity field hockey  tournament

Area high school field hockey fans are in for another treat this summer when Franklin Community Health Network (FCHN) hosts the annual Battle for Breast Cancer Tournament, a round-robin benefit field hockey tournament taking place at Thomas College in Waterville on Saturday, July 18, from 1 to 9 p.m.

The July 18 benefit tournament will feature eight Central Maine high school field hockey teams: Skowhegan, Spruce Mountain, Messalonskee, Mt. Blue, Lawrence, Mt. View, Leavitt, and Nokomis; and four middle school teams: Skowhegan, Mt. Blue, Nokomis, and Spruce Mountain.

Team members are currently seeking donations from family and friends for the tournament and approaching businesses for sponsorship. On-line donations can be made by visiting www.fchn.org/support/donate and can be directed to one of the teams playing. Thomas College’s athletic facility features two side-by-side turf fields so that two games take place simultaneously. Cost to attend the tournament is $5 for adults and $2 for students.

Talk of the Townies at Yarmouth History Center

 On Thursday, July 16 at 7 p.m., the Yarmouth History Center will host “Talk of the Townies,” a special program andlecture about Yarmouth’s own Townies baseball team. Joining us will be Jim Baumer, author of “When Towns Had Teams,” the definitive book about town teams in Maine during the mid-20th Century. We encourage the public to bring memories, photos, and other memorabilia related to the lecture to share during this event. This is a free program. Jim Baumer’s book will be available for purchase and autographs.

 This program is offered in conjunction with the Yarmouth Clam Festival’s 50^th Anniversary as we celebrate the Townies’ many championship wins. Be sure to look for the History Center’s baseball-themed float in the Parade on Friday, July 17.

Loon Echo Bike Trek

BRIDGTON — Registration is now open for Maine’s toughest century bike ride, the Loon Echo Trek, set for Saturday, Sept. 19. New this year, a $15 early bird discount is available to all who register before midnight July 19. Additionally, early registrants have a chance at a stay at The Oxford House Inn. This getaway includes an overnight? and a three-course dinner for two and a full breakfast.

The annual tradition attracts nature-lovers and athletes from all over New England to the Western Lakes region each fall, often during peek foliage time. The event features Maine’s toughest century bicycle ride, with 100 miles of terrain over roadways and through national forests.

The event supports the Loon Echo Land Trust’s mission of conserving and caring for land, including southern Maine’s highest mountain. Participants are encouraged to get pledges of support, with top fundraisers earning an overnight stay or a 2015 season passes at Maine’s top skiing destinations, among other prizes.
