FARMINGTON — Thieves at the Octagon House on Saturday night didn’t leave their calling card, but something just as good — their debit card.
The house, owned by the Farmington Historical Society, is at Perham and High streets. When a member noticed a door on the Perham Street side slightly open Tuesday, she went through the house and at first, didn’t notice anything missing, Farmington police officer Michael Lyman said. But she did find a debit card on the floor upstairs, he said.
She didn’t recognize the name on it as anyone who should have been in the building and called police. The card led them to two women, one from Farmington and the other from Manchester. When contacted by police, the two women admitted to entering the building late Saturday night and taking a couple items. They said they were intoxicated at the time, he said.
The women took a book published in 1886 and a small picture frame from the house, Lyman said. The items have been recovered and were not damaged, he said.
The incident is under investigation and no charges have been brought, so police would not release the women’s names.
