CARMEL (AP) — Authorities have released the name of the woman shot by a sheriff’s deputy in central Maine after advancing toward the deputy holding what was described as a homemade weapon.
A spokesman for the state Attorney General’s office said Monday that Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Kari Kurth shot and wounded 20-year-old Alexis Lannon, of Bangor, on Sunday morning.
The non-fatal shooting sent the woman to the hospital and shut down a section of U.S. Route 2 in Carmel.
Police say they responded to reports that a woman with a chain-like weapon was causing damage and threatening motorists.
Authorities are investigating to determine if the shooting was justified. Kurth is on leave.
The office says it is the sixth officer-involved shooting of the year in Maine, only one of which was fatal.
