OAKFIELD (AP) — A lawyer representing a man accused of killing a northeastern Maine couple in September 2013 is asking a judge to suppress statements he made during his arrest.
WCSH-TV reported (http://on.wlbz2.com/1RBHo1a) Mathew Davis had a suppression hearing in court Thursday morning in Houlton. His attorneys say he wasn’t read his Miranda rights at the proper time.
Police say Matthew Davis shot 51-year-old Michael Kitchen and 49-year-old Heidi Pratt and then lit their Oakfield house on fire.
Officers and detectives testified they read him his rights at the state police barracks hours later and said they didn’t attempt to discuss the case until that time. They say they were focused on keeping Davis warm and fed since he was wet and shivering.
Davis is charged with two counts of murder.
