ANDOVER — Eight Andover firefighters responded to a fully involved car fire Wednesday evening that destroyed a 2012 Mustang owned by Mark Folland, fire Chief Justin Tibbetts said.

Tibbetts said Folland had parked the car on the lawn at 649 East Andover Road in East Andover, listening to music on the radio for most of the day. When he tried to start it, the battery was dead, so his father jump-started it with his truck and Folland drove it into the garage, he said.

However, when he was about to start cleaning it, he saw smoke coming from the car and realized it was on fire, Tibbetts said. Folland pushed the car out of the garage and onto the driveway, but the car continued rolling backward and stopped in the middle of East Andover Road.

Andover firefighters were dispatched at 7:04 p.m. and were told that an explosion had occurred, but the caller thought it might have been a tire bursting.

Four firefighters arrived at 7:17 p.m. in Engine 41 and four arrived in their personal vehicles. Tibbetts said that when he arrived, the Mustang was fully involved in fire in the middle of the road. They extinguished it using foam and cleaned up the mess. Adley’s Auto of Rumford sent a flatbed tow truck and winched the Mustang aboard.

Tibbetts said he didn’t know what caused the fire other than a possible electrical malfunction, but because the car caught fire in the garage, police were not called to the scene to investigate.

There were no injuries.
