AUBURN — Edward E. Newcomb, 73, resident of Auburn, fought a courageous battle with cancer (mesothelioma) that carried him to the skies above on Monday, June 22, at 6:45 a.m. at the Hospice House in Auburn.

Edward, known as “Ed” or “Papa,” was born in Portland and enlisted in the Navy at 18 years old. He was a machinist aboard a ship, fighting in Vietnam. Ed spent 22 years fighting for our country.

After he left the service, he enjoyed working in the carnivals and fairs. He owned a game trailer. This is where he met his beloved wife, Jeanine.

Ed and Jeanine spent winter on the east coast of Florida, fishing on the ocean, camping on the beach, playing cards with Edward’s friends and spending summers in Maine. He was a fantastic golf player and helped maintain his favorite course, Pine Acres.

Edward is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jeanine Newcomb; sister, Bertha; brothers, Roland and Floyd; daughters, Tonya and Shondel; stepdaughters, Joanne, Louise and Janet Labrie; grandchildren, Antonny, Crystal and Danielle Lopez, Phillip, Terisa and Krystine Stevenson, Reanne Labric and Leah Punch; and his great-grandson, Ryken Johnson, who helped him to get through that cold, hard winter.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Raush at Central Maine Medical Center, as well as the staff at the Hospice House for their wonderful care of Edward.
