1930 – 2015
FAYETTE — Augustus “Gus” “Alvin” Elliott, 84, of Fayette, died early Tuesday morning, June 23, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Gus, known to some as “Alvin,” was born Aug. 19, 1930, at his family homestead in Raymond, N.H., the fourth born out of 11 children to Herbert and Laura (Hartford) Elliott. He attended school in New Hampshire and began working with his father in the sawmill at the age of 13, using cross-cut saws to help provide for his family. He entered in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951 and served until 1953, at which point he joined the Army until his honorable discharge in 1958. Gus proudly served his country for two deployments overseas during the Korean War in both the Marines and Army. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.
A hard-work ethic was instilled into Gus at a very young age. Upon leaving the military, he went on to own his own sawmill, Elliott Lumber, until 1970. In 1971, he moved to Dixfield, where he worked at Dixfield Lumber until his retirement in 1988. Although retired, he continued working at his son’s lumberyard, Twin Rivers Building Supply, until he was 81 years old. He was a hardworking man who never stopped providing for his family.
Gus was a highly productive man, never wasting a minute of the day. He was a precise man of technicality and had a mathematical talent for crunching numbers. He enjoyed challenging others with trivia and fun facts. He was a storyteller and always had a good joke at the ready for his beloved company. He was a true Mainer and enjoyed fishing, especially with his grandchildren, and was a true patriarch in every sense of the word.
He is survived by his lifetime companion, Hannah Elliott of Fayette; children, Bonnie King and her husband, Joseph, of Jay, Alan Elliott and his girlfriend, Kim Folsom, of Dixfield, Nancy Jewette and her husband, Kevin, of Fayette, Laurie Mitchell and her boyfriend, Larry Houle, of Livermore Falls, Augustus Elliott Jr., and his wife, Molly, of Canton, Jeanne Jewett and her husband, Randy, of North Jay, Don Elliott and his wife, Wendy, of Fayette, and Ginger and Paul Pomerleau of Jay; sister, Gloria Elliott of Durham, N.H., and brother, Jerry Elliott of West Virginia; grandchildren, Scott King of Livermore Falls, Joe King Jr. of Livermore Falls, Nate Elliott of Dixfield, Yogi Hiscock of Auburn, Mike Levesque of Epping, N.H., Matt Levesque of Lincoln, Kara Dube of Augusta, Brian Dolloff of Jay, Shawn Ready of Livermore Falls, Travis Knight of Jay, Augustus Elliott III of Brewer, Ryan Pease of Berwick, Beckah Austin, Chris Jewett of Jay, and Kyle Elliott of Fayette; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
