PORTLAND — In dominating fashion, Marshwood made the most of its inaugural appearance in the Class A state title game Saturday.

Lindsey Poirier was the offensive catalyst for the Hawks, netting seven goals and adding an assist to lead Marshwood to a 13-5 win over East A champion Messalonskee at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

The Hawks (13-3) jumped out early, scored often and went into halftime with a seven-goal advantage, thanks in large part to three goals from Reagan Nichols.

The goals came quickly, while Messalonskee tried to slow things down and possess the ball. A big piece of that was the play of keeper Emily Kahler.

On the other end, the Hawks’ defense buckled down and allowed its offense to work.

After the half, Marshwood continued to pour on the offense, running the score to 12-1 before the Eagles started to find some footing. Messalonskee added four goals in the final frame against only one more for Marshwood to round out the scoring.

Cape boys reign

PORTLAND — It wasn’t as lopsided as some of their past victories, but Cape Elizabeth wasn’t caring “how” Saturday, only that the Capers reached their goal at all.

Owen Thoreck led a balanced offense with two goals as Cape Elizabeth overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to earn a 7-5 win over Yarmouth in the Class B boys’ state championship game.

Matthew Beatty and Bill Jacobs each netted a pair for the Clippers in the loss.

Jacobs and Joe Oliva went back to back in the opening quarter to stake Yarmouth to the 2-0 advantage. Riley Pillsbury countered for the Capers.

After Jacobs restored the Clippers’ two-goal edge, Griffin and Own Thoreck struck for back-to-back tallies to even things at three in the second quarter.

Beatty’s first of the game pushed Yarmouth in front at the half, 4-3.

The Capers rebounded in the second half when Robert Sarka, James Bottomley and Ben Shea scored in succession to pull the Western B champs in front by a pair.

Beatty and Own Thoreck traded goals in the final frame, and Cape held on for the two-goal decision.

Yarmouth girls edge Kennebunk in OT

PORTLAND — After a rough start to the season, Yarmouth has righted the ship in a big way.

The Clippers got a goal from Lilly Watson in the first of two overtime sessions and hung on from there to upend Kennebunk, 11-10, in the Class B girls’ state championship game at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Emma Torres netted four goals in the first half to help the Clippers out to a 7-5 lead at the break.

They ran the lead to 9-6 early in the second half before the rams (17-1) roared back with a pair, one each from Olivia Sandford and Kyra Schwartzman, to get back within one.

An Eliza Lunt strike pushed the Clippers’ lead back to two, but Kennebunk rallied late in the second half. Molly Parent pulled the Rams to within one at 10-9, and Sandford completed the comeback to knot the game at 10 in the final minutes.

After Watson scored early in overtime, it was Yarmouth keeper Mary Kate Gunville’s turn to shine. She stopped a pair of great Kennebunk chances in the overtime periods to preserve the win for the Clippers.
