SABATTUS — Sabattus will join other Androscoggin County municipalities to seek legal action against the Androscoggin County commissioners.
Selectmen agreed Thursday night to fund up to $1,500 for legal expenses.
At issue is the interpretation of the County Charter in regard to the role of the county Budget Committee. The Budget Committee voted last fall to cut the salaries of county commissioners and eliminate their health benefits.
Claiming they had the power to overrule that decision, commissioners voted for a less severe salary cut and funded individual health coverage.
Last month, commissioners voted to amend the charter to prevent themselves from raising their own salaries without the approval of the Budget Committee. But the question of the Budget Committee’s authority over the entire budget remains.
Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said he thinks the action by the commissioners to adjust their salaries prior to the vote was unlawful.
The city of Lewiston is leading the legal fight against the county.
In other matters Thursday night, selectmen honored members of the Sabattus EMS First Responder Service with the 2015 Spirit of America Volunteer award. The award lauds their integrity and dedication regarding their decision to continue to volunteer for the service so that funding could be put toward training opportunities. The Sabattus EMS service went three-and-a-half years without compensation for this purpose.
A recognition ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at the Androscoggin County Courthouse at 2 Turner St. in Auburn.
