1928 – 2015
LEWISTON — Glenwood “Glen” Bangs Farmer, 87, of West Farmington, passed away on Saturday, June 13, at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born at home in West Farmington on Feb. 8, 1928, a son of Ellery and Hazel (Brown) Farmer. He received his education in West Farmington and Farmington schools and married Eletrice Stewart of New Vineyard on June 14, 1945. Sunday, Flag Day, would have been their 70th anniversary.
He was employed at Metcalf Lumber when they were first married, and later worked for Luce Oil Co., which transitioned over the years. At the time of his retirement, it was known as Farmington Oil.
For several years, following his retirement, he enjoyed working part-time for E. L. Vining & Son.
Glen belonged to the West Farmington Fire Department, along with his dad, beginning in his teen years. He continued with the department as it joined with the Farmington Fire Department on March 3, 1970, and was promoted to deputy chief on March 1, 1977. He formally retired on July 23, 1991.
Glen was a past member of the Farmington Odd Fellows and former selectman for the West Farmington Village Corp. He was a member of the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a past deacon and also had served on the finance committee.
In addition to being committed to caring and serving his community, he was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and tending his yard. He also enjoyed crafting with wood and kept busy in his “shop,” making a variety of items, particularly wooden tulips. He will be remembered for his many acts of kindness, generous spirit and unique ways of caring for his family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Sharon Stevens, Deanne “Deannie” Hyer and her husband, Alton, Glendon “Glendy” Farmer and his wife, Cathy, Gregory Farmer and his wife, Debora, and Kimberly Smart and her husband, Gregg; grandchildren, Eric Stevens and his wife, Marianna, Raquel Caron and her husband, Richard, Steven Farmer, Bethany Miller and her husband, Jared, Lisa Erickson and her husband, Darby, Sara Farmer, Travis Farmer, Chad Farmer, Seth Famer and his wife, Sandee, Michelle Lord, Alan Pomeroy and his wife, Bonnie, Mark Pomeroy, Nichole Lane and her husband, Jeremie, Ginger Farmer, Darcie Thibodeau and her husband, Eloy Gonzales, Jason Thibodeau and his wife, Megan, Randall Thibodeau and his wife, Felicia, and Tony Thibodeau; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; in-laws, Geraldine Farmer, Carolee and Edward Merrill and Lee Stewart. He also leaves behind many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins, who always made his day brighter.
He was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife; daughters, Bonnie and Connie; and son, David; son-in-law, Eric Stevens; siblings, Naomi Higgins and her husband, Richard, Maurice Hiscock and his wife, Arlene, and Lawrence Farmer, Muriel Stewart and Rodney Stewart; and his wife, Helen Faye.
