Leisure Marathon
PORTLAND — Maine will be host to a unique triathlon on June 25 and 26. When images of a triathlete come to mind, one often sees a dripping wet swimmer or blistered runner, but a growing group of men and women have set out to redefine the term. The Leisureman Triathlon was created for individuals who enjoy relaxing sports and friendly competition.
Leisureman consists of bowling, golf and Texas Hold’em poker games. Created and organized by two Maine natives, the third annual event will begin on June 25 at Easy Day in South Portland for the three-hour bowling leg of the triathlon. On June 26, the competition will pick back up at the Falmouth Country Club for a full 18 holes followed by a tournament-style Texas Hold’em poker game. Winners will be determined by a combination of their scores from the three events.
Proceeds from this year’s triathlon will once again benefit Warrior Hike, a nonprofit organization that supports armed service veterans as they “walk off the war” by hiking national scenic trails, including the Appalachian Trail.
The Leisureman is looking to expand in Maine for 2016’s event. For more information about hosting in your area, please contact the Leisureman Triathlon at www.leisuremantriathlon.com or the Maine Sports Commission at 207-613-8302 or info@mainesportscommission.com.
Girls Golf Fair
PORTLAND — The First Tee of Maine, in collaboration with Women’s Maine State Golf Association and Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association, will hold its Second Annual Girls Golf Fair on Sunday, June 28. The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. rain or shine at the short-game practice area adjacent to Riverside South Golf Course. The Girls Golf Fair, free to everyone, will provide instruction by local golf professionals, current college players and seasoned golfers. Girls of all ages and abilities are encouraged to attend.
In addition to golf activities, there will be give-aways, crafts, music, prizes, snacks, fun contests, and information on area golf courses’ junior programs for girls, the state women’s golf associations and a listing of college golf scholarships for young women.
The Girls Golf Fair is designed to introduce girls to the game of golf in a low-key, fun environment. Participants will move from station to station, receiving instruction on putting, chipping, and full swing. In addition, they will have the opportunity to play a complete hole. Girls who are already golfers will receive instruction in all areas of the sport that will take their game up a notch. SNAG® Golf (Starting New At Golf), an instruction system that uses oversized equipment and Velcro balls that stick to targets, will be available for first-time golfers along with a mini-golf course that will challenge all levels.
