1935 – 2015

SCARBOROUGH — Joan Ona (Charlton) Calder, 80, of Leeds died on Friday, June 5, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough after a long illness.

Born in New Gloucester on Feb. 11, 1935, to Emanuel Carlson Charlton and Sarah (Sadie) Harding Charlton, Joan was the eldest of six children. She graduated from Monmouth Academy and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Joan loved spending time with her grandchildren and loved watching all of their activities. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed preparing her own fresh fruits and vegetables. Joan’s favorite pastimes were road trips, playing bingo, caring for children, visiting with friends, spending time on Moosehead Lake and East Grand Lake and any time she could spend with animals.

Joan was predeceased by her parents; brothers, James, Jeffrey and Joel Charlton; and her sister, Jane Charlton. She is survived by her daughter, Cristen Dilworth and husband, Tom Dilworth, and their children, Cloe and Charlton (Chachi) of Falmouth; her sister, Judy Wade of St. Augustine, Fla.; many nieces and a nephew; along with many more great-nieces and great-nephews.
