Monmouth 6, Sacopee Valley 1

SOUTH HIRAM — No. 6 Monmouth avenged an upset loss in last year’s Class C West baseball tournament by turning the tables on No. 3 Sacopee Valley, 6-1, in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Nick Sanborn allowed only three hits and struck out four over the seven-inning route for Monmouth (11-7), which will make the much shorter trip to No. 2 Winthrop for Saturday’s semifinals.

The Mustangs broke it open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mat Foulke singled, pinch runner Gage Cote stole second and third and Nick Dovinsky walked in front of RBI hits by Chandler Harris, Hunter Richardson and Jariah Caissie.

Caissie’s hit knocked in a pair for the Mustangs, who allowed only a harmless infield single in the seventh. Defending regional champion Sacopee (15-2) scored its lone run on the back end of a delayed steal in the sixth but gave up the third out with its cleanup hitter at the plate in the process.

Harris, Caissie and Travis Hartford each had two of Monmouth’s nine hits.
