I disagree with Richard Nadeau’s opinion, “Democrats are only good for raising more taxes” (letter, June 9).

Democrats are good at wanting a safe environment and clean water and good schools. Democrats want a living wage for hard work and believe in Social Security, which may be the only income some retirees have, especially women. Thanks go to Franklin D. Roosevelt for Social Security and Lyndon B. Johnson for Medicare.

The savings and loan crisis in the early ’90s happened after almost three terms of Republican presidents. Bill Clinton’s economic bill had predictions of economic doom but, instead, resulted with a surplus at the end of his term. After the George W. Bush terms, there was another financial crisis and near depression.

In my lifetime, Democrats have managed the economy better than the Republicans.

Currently, states with Republican governors — New Jersey, Wisconsin and Louisiana — are in crisis with high deficits and slow growth. Kansas, facing high deficits, closed schools early. Gov. Paul LePage wants Maine on the same path.

The Democratic Party is the best choice for social freedom, economic development, education and working people.
