DIXFIELD — The Regional School Unit 10 budget of $37.1 million passed by nearly a 2-to-1 margin Tuesday.

The unofficial tally was 2,238 to 1,193.

Byron was the only one of the 12 district towns to reject it, 5-14. The town is in the process of withdrawing from the district.

Votes from the other towns were: Buckfield, 109-85; Canton, 98-42; Carthage, 31-11; Dixfield, 419-329; Mexico, 290-126; Peru, 258-166; Hartford, 90-59; Roxbury, 20-12; Sumner, 16-9; Hanover, 10-8; and Rumford, 892-392.

The 2015-16 budget is about 1.5 percent higher than this fiscal year’s.

It includes money to restore several of the 44 positions that were eliminated in the 2014-15 budget. They are: half- and full-time positions for physical education, art, music, social work, guidance and some additional administrative hours.

Superintendent Craig King was pleased with the results.

“The school board was very meticulous in creating a budget that met the needs of the students while being sensitive to the taxpayers of the community,” he said in an email.

Rumford resident Jeremy Volkernick defeated incumbent school director Marcia Chaisson for a three-year term by a vote of 666-581.

Richard Dyer of Hartford was unopposed.

No one from Mexico filed papers for the seat of Peter Zanoni, who did not seek re-election.

Recently appointed board member Ed Parent of Peru ran unopposed for a three-year term.

The RSU 10 board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 22, at Dirigo High School to formally accept the vote and to act on other business.
