1924 – 2015

LEWISTON — George Ashley Burgess, 90, of Minot Avenue, Auburn, formerly of 165 Bartlett St. Lewiston, died Thursday, May 28, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Frye on Sept. 18, 1924, the son of the late William A. and Flora A. (Bushley) Burgess.

On Aug. 21, 1954, he married the former Constance J. Enman of Auburn, who survives him.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served on the USS Tuscaloosa.

Prior to his retirement, he worked for many years for the Highway Department for town of Rumford, and later on as a heavy equipment operator for several area construction companies, including St. Laurent Excavation.

He raised his family in Rumford and Mechanic Falls and in 1967, moved to Lewiston.

George was very proud of his Navy past, and Memorial Day and Veterans Day were very important holidays as a proud American.

For those who can remember, he and his wife could often be seen sitting together on their porch at 165 Bartlett St. They enjoyed waving and talking to passers-by, while not even knowing their names.

Construction was always part of his life, and he took his family to excavation and construction sites on weekend drives. He enjoyed antiquing and flea markets.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters; Susan Booker and her husband, Randall, of Sabattus, Shari Gosselin and her husband, John, of Lewiston, and Sandra Beaudoin and her husband, Maurice, of Lewiston; two sons, Steven Burgess and his companion, Kim, of Lewiston, and Scot Burgess and his wife, Paula, of Turner; two sisters; Marilyn MacDonald of Canada, and Marie Jonitis of Portland; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Shawn Burgess; and several brothers and sisters.
