JAY — Spruce Mountain High School Principal T.J. Plourde on Thursday evening gave the Regional School Unit 73 board a rundown of activities scheduled in the next two weeks.

It’s the busiest time of the school year, he said. Graduation is set for Sunday, June 7. Marching practice will continue for about two weeks.

Awards Night is set for June 4 and baccalaureate is scheduled for June 5. A final assembly for seniors, who will wear their caps and gowns, takes place next week.

About $180,000 in scholarship money will be presented to seniors, Plourde said.

“We have many talented students here. I’m very proud,” he said.

Jay Elementary School Principal Chris Hollingsworth said the traditional step-up day for elementary students will be eliminated this year because of the new emphasis on performance-based education. However, fifth-graders will visit Spruce Mountain Middle School as they traditionally do.

At Livermore Elementary School, Principal Kevin Harrington said a 20-by-20-foot sandbox for kindergartners and first-graders is complete.

He said the school’s food pantry will be ready by the end of June and opened for the summer. Hannaford corporate headquarters and the local supermarket have made donations to the pantry.

Also Thursday, the board accepted the resignation of Sylvia Desjardins, a longtime third-grade teacher at Jay Elementary School. She is retiring.

The board also said goodbye to board member Tim Madden who has represented Livermore for the past five years.

A special board meeting is set for 6 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the Cedar Street Central Office to act on more than two dozen continuing and probationary teacher contracts.
