1927 – 2015
FARMINGTON — Evelyn Donald Durrell, 87, of Jay, died suddenly late Tuesday evening, May 26, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
She was born in North Jay on July 20, 1927, a daughter of John and Georgina (Stevenson) Donald Sr. After graduating from Jay High School in 1945, she worked for Wilton Trust Co. and later for H. E. Kyes Insurance Agency. She retired from Central Maine Power Co., Augusta, in 1989 after 20 years of service.
On Dec. 24, 1947, she married Phillips H. Durrell. He passed Jan. 5, 2007. They celebrated 59 years of marriage. She was a longtime member of the Bartlett Memorial Methodist Church of North Jay, where she was organist for several years and treasurer of the trustees. She was a former member of Woodbine Temple No. 47 Pythian Sisters for several years. She enjoyed doing needlepoint, counted cross-stitch, crocheting, reading and watching the Red Sox.
She is survived by three daughters, Judith R. Gidney and her husband, Raymond, of Windsor, Diane L. Durrell of Winslow, and Frances D. Spiotta of Jay; five grandchildren, Karen Goedtzfridt-Gidney and partner, Angela, Chris Gidney and his wife, Sandi, Ryan Newgard and his wife, Danielle, Patrick Spiotta and his wife, Melody, and Adam Spiotta and his wife, Erica; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Phillips; her four brothers, John Jr., George, Alex and David; sister, Fanny; and son-in-law, Michael J. Spiotta.
