At the May 5 selectmen’s meeting in Buckfield, the first selectman proposed enacting a rule that would prevent voters from increasing the budget amounts recommended by the selectmen at any upcoming town meeting.

The selectmen voted 2-1 in support of that proposal, with the second selectman voting in opposition.

That action would seem to imply that Buckfield taxpayers are unable to make wise decisions about their own tax money.

The selectmen’s effort to stifle taxpayer input goes against the purpose of town meetings, which are a terrific example of democracy at work.

If the selectmen refuse to reverse their vote, then the legality of their action should be explored.
