SANDY RIVER PLANTATION — Police said a Clinton couple were injured Sunday night when the motorcycle they were riding failed to negotiate a curve on Route 4 and went into a ditch.
The motorcycle apparently flipped over, throwing James Turcotte, 58, and his wife, Rebecca Turcotte, 53, off, Franklin County Deputy Kevin Hartley said Monday.
Speed was not a factor, he said.
The Turcottes were wearing helmets.
The couple was heading south from Rangeley in an area of S-curves when the 6:25 p.m. crash occurred, Hartley said. The motorcycle went down into a ditch lined with riprap.
Another motorcyclist who was traveling with the couple told police that they were going 40 mph when the accident occurred.
James Turcotte thought he had hit something in the road but emergency responders looked and could not find anything, Hartley said.
Turcotte was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington while his wife was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Both were moved to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, a FMH spokeswoman said.
James Turcotte was listed in fair condition and Rebecca Turcotte was listed in good condition on Monday afternoon, a CMMC spokeswoman said.
Cpl. Nate Reid assisted Hartley. Rangeley Fire Rescue Department and NorthStar also responded to assist.
The 1981 Yamaha GS 850 was destroyed.
