1921 – 2015

BIDDEFORD — Anna A. Sawyer, 93, formerly of Jay, passed away Monday morning, May 18, at Southern Maine Medical Center, after a brief illness.

She was born in Chisholm on June 5, 1921, the daughter of Antonio and Antonia (DeCicchi) Scappaticci. On June 7, 1945, she married Clifford Sawyer at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. They were married for 61 years before his passing on Dec. 16, 2006.

She graduated from Jay High School in 1938. Anna was a housewife, and also manufactured snow shoes at Aldrich Manufacturing Shoe Shop in Norway and fashionable leather shoes at the Livermore Falls Shoe Shop. She also worked for Dakin Dairy Farm before spending 25 years with Berry Hills Apple Orchard, both located in Livermore.

She was a communicant at St. Rose of Lima Church until 2005 when she moved to Old Orchard Beach and became a member of Saint Margaret’s Church and Good Shepherd Parish. She was a longtime member of the Daughters of Isabella and was an avid craftsperson and painter. She crocheted, knitted and painted many crafts and had a small shop on the porch of her home in Jay. She and her husband traveled to many craft fairs to showcase their unique works.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard Sawyer and his wife, Cornelia, of Saco, and Walter Sawyer and his wife, Nancy, of Alexandria, Va.; as well as five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford Sawyer; son, David Sawyer in 1962; brothers, Nicolo Scappaticci and John Scappaticci of Jay; and sister, Josephine Benedetto of Norway.
