FREEPORT — A 23-year-old Freeport woman faces several charges including operating under the influence of drugs after police allegedly found her passed out Saturday in her car with her two small children in the back.

Miranda J. Dawson was also charged with unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and endangering the welfare of a child, Freeport Police Chief Gerald Schofield said Monday.

Officers were called to the Circle K on Mallett Drive just before 7 p.m. Saturday by someone who allegedly saw Dawson sitting in the driver’s seat of the running car, passed out, with two children, ages 2 and 3 years old, also in the car.

Rescue personnel initially couldn’t wake her, but eventually spoke to her, and police suspected she was under the influence of drugs. Officers allegedly found four different types of prescription medication in the vehicle: Suboxone, alprazolam, diazepam and clonazepam, Schofield said.

Dawson was held in Cumberland County Jail on $1,000 pending an initial court appearance on Monday.

The children were released to a family member.
