HOLLIS, Maine — A 24-year-old Raymond man was killed early Saturday morning when his car crossed the centerline on Route 202 and struck a tractor-trailer, according to Maine State Police.
Travis Lowberg was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lowberg was driving east about 3 a.m. when his passenger car went into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by Marc Bowland, 35, of Rhode Island, according to investigators.
The cab caught fire upon impact, but Bowland was able to escape through the passenger side window. He sustained injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, police said.
Because gas was leaking from the tractor-trailer, a special cleanup crew with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was dispatched to the scene.
“It is too early in the investigation to say what led to Travis Lowberg’s vehicle crossing into the opposite travel lane,” Maine State Trooper Kyle Wells said Saturday afternoon in an email.
The investigation shut down Route 202 to traffic for about seven hours.
