RUMFORD — The Rumford Police Department presented a Good Citizenship Award to Vincent Sirois during Thursday evening’s Board of Selectmen meeting.

Board Chairman Greg Buccina handed the award to the youth while Police Chief Stacy Carter read a statement about Vincent’s good deed.

“Mr. Sirois’ keen observations and good character were crucial in solving a burglary and theft complaint that occurred in March of 2015,” Carter said. Because of Vincent’s help, detectives were able to recover the stolen property and make an arrest, the chief said.

Citizens like Sirois make the community great, Carter said.

In other business, Town Manager John Madigan said the public works department is nearly ready to start making temporary repairs to the sidewalks in the downtown.

Selectman Brad Adley said two areas that particularly need attention are in front of Bangor Savings Bank and in front of Brian’s Bistro.

Selectman Frank DiConzo said other priorities should be the wheelchair ramps on the corners. He suggested taking the middle granite stones out and opening up the whole corner.

The scope of the sidewalk project and other improvements downtown prompted Main-Land Development engineer Rick Dunton to recommend the project be moved to 2017. The Maine Department of Transportation’s plans to work on two bridges in 2016 was part of his reasoning.

Meanwhile, selectmen authorized making temporary repairs to the sidewalks in the downtown to last until the eventual start of the 2017 project.

Madigan said the amount of debris collected in the spring cleanup by public works was way down. Residents have until the end of May to take items to the transfer station free of charge.
