With no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, Roe crushed a three-run triple to deep left-center as the Red Eddies came from behind for a 3-1 victory over the Rams.
“I had a bad day all day up at the plate and when I got up I said, ‘I need to get a hit here,’ ” Roe said. “I got down in the count and then I was ready to come and hit it. At that point, I was thinking to sit back and see curveball, but I saw fastball so I just took it.”
Edward Little (4-3) struggled offensively through the first five innings, registering just two hits off Cony pitcher Justin Rodrigue. The Red Eddies had five base runners up to that point, but matched that total in the sixth inning alone.
Drew Lashua led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. Jarod Plourde walked on a full count and Lew Jensen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Roe coming to the plate. The senior first baseman — batting 0-for-2 on the day to that point — nearly left the yard on a 2-2 offering from Rodrigue. Roe’s triple one hopped the fence as Lashua, Plourde and Jensen all came around to score.
“Elijah’s been hitting the ball well for us all year and he did again in a great situation,” Edward Little coach Dave Jordan said.
The three-run sixth inning put an end to what had been a frustrating day with runners in scoring position. It started in the first inning when the Red Eddies put runners at second and third with one out, but infield ground outs by Jensen and Roe couldn’t bring them around to score.
Plourde doubled to lead off the fourth and moved over to third on a balk. With Plourde on third and no outs, Jensen grounded to short, Roe struck out and Brandon Varney also grounded to short. Plourde never moved from third.
“Their pitcher was solid in terms of painting the corners and keeping us off-balance,” Jordan said. “I felt like we had some pretty good at-bats but we weren’t able to break through with a couple guys in scoring position a few innings, but give Cony credit. They’re a very good team, well coached and they made a lot of nice plays to get out of those innings.”
Roe’s three-run triple was all the run support Plourde would need to get his first varsity win on the mound. The sophomore tossed a complete-game three-hitter, allowing one run while striking out six and walking four. He struck out pinch hitter Ben Leet and Spencer Buck to end the game.
“I was keeping the ball in, keeping it away from them,” Plourde said. “I kept the curveball low and it kept them off guard, I guess.”
He worked out of trouble in the sixth after the Rams (4-3) loaded the bases with one out. Plourde walked Buck and hit Reid Shostak to open the frame before getting Tayler Carrier to fly out to Roe at first. A line-drive single by Mitchell Caron loaded the bases. But the Red Eddies got out of the inning unscathed as Plourde threw out Buck at home on a fielder’s choice and Rodrigue popped out to Varney behind the plate.
Cony’s lone run came in the third when Plourde hit Shostak on an 0-2 pitch with the bases load, scoring Connor Perry, who singled to center field with one out.
The key for the Red Eddies was the defense behind Plourde, who didn’t commit an error. Jordan said his team has put an emphasis on fielding during practice after errors cost them games earlier in the season.
“That was good because we’ve had trouble a little bit with some errors in big innings that probably cost us a couple games early on,” Jordan said. “We had a bye this week in the middle of the week and we really put a huge emphasis on some defensive work.”
Rodrigue suffered the loss on the mound for the Rams. He allowed three runs on five hits, striking out three and walking three.
“It was his best pitching performance,” Cony coach Don Plourde said. “He, for the most part, was on top of hitters, hitting his spots. He did a nice job. Both pitchers did.”
