GARDINER (AP) — A Portland man has been charged after allegedly wrestling with a state trooper who was searching him for drugs.
The suspect, 27-year-old Andrew Hicks, was eventually subdued by the trooper with help from two or three passing motorists on Interstate 295 in Gardiner.
It all started Tuesday afternoon when the trooper pulled over a vehicle driven by Hicks’ girlfriend for speeding.
After smelling marijuana, the trooper asked Hicks to get out of the car. A search yielded what appeared to be heroin and oxycodone pills on Hicks’ person.
Police say at that point Hicks said he wasn’t going to jail, demanded the drugs back, then lowered his shoulder and drove the trooper into the highway’s travel lane.
Hicks faces drug and assault charges and is being held in jail.
