YORK — A group of medical marijuana caregivers has filed suit against a southern Maine town, claiming that a recently adopted ordinance violates state confidentiality laws.

The Portland Press Herald reports the York ordinance requires all medical marijuana caregivers to obtain business licenses from the town.

In order to do so, a form that becomes public record must be filled out. The ordinance, passed in November, also allows police to inspect the premises.

The group’s attorney, Lynne Williams, says the town cannot pass an ordinance conflicting with state law regarding marijuana caregivers’ rights to remain anonymous.

Williams asked for an injunction that would postpone the May 5 deadline the caregivers were given to apply for licenses.

Town Manager Steve Burns couldn’t be reached by the newspaper for comment.
