1929 – 2015
WEST PARIS — Thelma Elaine (Cushing) Remington, 85, a longtime resident of Bethel, passed away peacefully at Ledgeview Living Center on the evening of Sunday, April 26.
Thelma was born May 5, 1929, in Andover, to Edgar Lawrence Cushing and Florena Ethelyn Cole. After attending Andover High School, she married Clarence Albert Remington on Dec. 16, 1945.
Thelma and Clarence moved to Bethel, where they became active in the local community. For years, she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school and worked for SAD 44 Adult Education. She volunteered at the Bethel Library and, at one time, read books to make recordings for the blind.
Thelma indulged in many hobbies. She loved knitting mittens, blankets, socks and other gifts for loved ones and the needy. She also acquired a passion for landscape painting, focusing on nature and wildlife.
An active member of the Bethel Church of the Nazarene, Thelma loved the Lord and often shared her faith with family and friends. She adored being with her grandchildren and developed a special bond with each of them, earning the affectionate name of “Gumby.” She possessed a well-known sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh.
Thelma is survived by her sister, Lorena Simmons of Andover; four sons, Clarence “Sonny” Remington of North Carolina, Robert Remington and wife, Anita, of Bethel, Alan Remington of Alaska, and Thomas Remington and wife, Melinda, of Florida; a daughter, Janina and husband, Dean Gross, of Hanover; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband, Clarence Albert Remington; and her brother, William “Buddy” Cushing.
