1947 – 2015
BOSTON, MASS .— Gordon A. Flint, 68, of Wilton, passed away in the presence of his loving family on Sunday, April 26, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Mass.
Gordon was born on Jan. 9, 1947, to Louise A. (Lund) and Gordon E. Flint in Cohasset, Mass.
He spent his childhood in Cohasset, where he and his wife, Patricia, began their school years together in the first grade. They graduated from Cohasset High School in 1964.
Gordon was a 1968 graduate of Bowdoin College, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Army Reserves at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
Gordon began his 42-year banking career at the Old Colony Trust Co. of the First National Bank of Boston. In 1973, he returned to Maine, where he worked as a trust officer at Northeast Bank of Lewiston and later served as the president of Northeast Bank of Farmington from 1983 to 1989. He held subsequent positions in private banking and commercial lending with Fleet Bank, Kingfield Savings Bank, Camden National Bank and Androscoggin Savings Bank. During this time, he received four Finance Authority of Maine Outstanding Lender Awards.
He was named a Friend of the University of Maine at Farmington, served one term as the president of the Farmington Ski Club and held the position of treasurer of the club for 22 years.
He was also part of the United Way family for many years, initially as a loaned executive in Boston. More recently, he served as a board member and treasurer of the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area, and, in 2005, he and his wife, Patricia, were volunteer co-chairmen of the Tri-Valley Area Campaign. He and Patricia also received the United Way Community Impact Award. He was a board member and treasurer of the Franklin County Children’s Task Force, and a past member of the board of Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Gordon was active in Old South Congregational Church of Farmington, where he served as its moderator and as a member of the Finance and Stewardship committees. He was a financial adviser to Western Maine Community Action.
Gordon was also a member of Wilson Lake Country Club.
Since his retirement in 2010, he enjoyed wintering in Naples, Fla., fly-fishing and golfing adventures with dear friends and visiting family in Massachusetts, Colorado and California.
He was an accomplished writer and was well known among his friends for his humorous narrations.
He considered himself a true “Son of Bowdoin.” He was an active alumnus and enjoyed interviewing prospective Maine students. He believed in these words from “The Offer of Bowdoin College,” written by William DeWitt Hyde, the seventh president of the college:
“To make hosts of friends…
Who are to be leaders in all walks of life;
To lose yourself in generous enthusiasms
And cooperate with others for common ends”
He leaves his devoted wife of 47 years, Patricia (Skehan) Flint; his son, Andrew and his wife, Jennifer, of Larkspur, Calif.; his son, Peter of Crested Butte, Colo.; and his daughter, Sarah Hammer and her husband, Mark, of Buena Vista, Colo. He leaves four beloved grandchildren. Gordon is also survived by his mother, Louise Flint of Cohasset, Mass.; his sister, Cheryl Libby and her husband, Kevin, of Falmouth; and his brother, Mark Flint and his wife, Jeanne, of Hull, Mass.
