WALDOBORO (AP) — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office said the owner of an auto repair shop is missing after an early morning fire destroyed his business and firefighters discovered a body burned beyond recognition in the basement.

Officials said Jeff Pinkham — who owned Pinkham’s Auto Repair on Route 1 in Waldboro — is missing and his truck was parked inside one of the building’s bays at the time of the fire.

Authorities said the body found in the basement was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for autopsy and identification. Results are not expected until sometime next week.

Firefighters said it appears the fire started in the basement.
