ORONO (AP) — Competitors in the New England Regional Concrete Canoe Competition are finding out if they can float their boats.

The University of Maine is hosting the event, in which more than 200 students from 11 universities subject concrete canoes to judging. Saturday is the second and final day of the event. The day included a canoe setup at 8 a.m., followed by aesthetic judging at 9 a.m. and a “swamp test” to gauge floatation at 10:30 a.m.

The event was originally slated to take place on Lake George in Skowhegan, but it has too much ice. The contest is designed for teams who want to compete in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ National Concrete Canoe Competition, held in June at Clemson University in South Carolina.
