RUMFORD — Several town employees and townspeople agreed to jump into the Swift River if residents can raise $100 for the March of Dimes by April 29.

Jessica Taylor, assistant customer service manager at Hannaford supermarket in Rumford, said that store is raising money for the March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization that funds research and programs related to improving the general health of mothers and babies.

Taylor said several officers with the Rumford Police Department, a local teacher, a pastor and Hannaford employees agreed to “plunge into the Swift River” if the store’s collection raised $100 by Wednesday, April 29.

“People can bring donations into the store, and when we hit $100, we’ll hold a little event at the Mexico Recreation Park,” Taylor said. “We encourage people to come and watch it. It should be a lot of fun.”

Taylor added that residents can still donate money to the March of Dimes at the April 29 event, although it is free to attend.

Among those who agreed to jump into the Swift River are Mountain Valley Middle School teacher Steve LaPointe and Corey Smith, manager of the meat department at Hannaford.

“I know some police officers agreed to jump in, too, although I’m not sure who among them is going to jump in yet,” Taylor said.
