FARMINGTON — After splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team split with New England College again on Sunday in doubleheader action. NEC came out on top in game one, 4-1, but UMF rebounded with a 12-0 victory behind Joey Humphrey’s 1-hitter in the nightcap.

NEC’s Steve DeLuca launched a two-run homer to left field to put the Pilgrims ahead in the sixth inning of the opening game. Bradley Jackson was the hard-luck loser for the Beavers.

Despite only having three hits in the first game, UMF rebounded in the second game with 12 hits and scored in every inning except for the first.

Jordan Croteau ripped an RBI double to left center field in the second inning. UMF opened up back-to-back extra base hits in the third inning and pushed the lead to 3-0. ben Keene powered an RBI triple to left center and Ethan Gouin followed up with an RBI double.

Croteau was 3-for-4 in Game 2 with a pair of runs scored. Humphrey gave up the lone hit in the second inning. The left-hander had seven strikeouts.

Bates, Williams split

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams and Bates split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bobby Coombs Field, with Williams taking the first game, 3-2, and Bates winning the second, 6-4, in 10 innings.

The first game was a pitchers’ duel for the first four innings. Williams’ Luke Rodino and Bates junior Connor Colombo combined for seven strikeouts, four hits and no walks. Colombo finished the game with eight strikeouts in six innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, however, Williams was able to get an edge on the Bobcats pitcher. Nate Michalski singled through the right side and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Jackson Parese singled to center, setting up Michalski to score on a passed ball. Colombo got out of the inning without further damage, but the Ephs took a 1-0 lead.

Rodino held his shutout through the sixth, but with two outs in the seventh and final inning, senior Nate Pajka and junior Samuel Warren both singled to put runners on first and second. Then sophomore Brendan Fox singled to left-center, driving in the tying run. Two wild pitches later, Pajka came home to give Bates a 2-1 lead.

Luke Pierce came through in the clutch with a hard-hit liner down the first base line for a walk-off, two-run double in the seventh, handing Williams the tight victory. Fox notched the Bobcats’ only RBI of the game, while Pierce went 2-4 for Williams.

In the second game, Bates opened the scoring with a two-run double by senior Sam Berry in the third inning. Jack Roberts responded for the Ephs with an RBI double of his own, cutting the lead to one.

Williams took the lead in the fifth when Schecter singled through the left side and Pierce brought him home with a triple down the right-field line. Pierce scored on the next play, a grounder to short by Phil McGovern.

Bates evened the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Senior Alex Parker led off with a bunt single. Parker reached third on a groundout and an error, but was thrown out at home on senior Mekae Hyde’s fielder’s choice. Berry followed with a double to center, however, to score Hyde. Williams added another run in the bottom of the inning.

Jacob Slater entered the game to pitch for Williams in the ninth, and Hyde greeted him with a bloop single into short centerfield to bring sophomore Ryan McCarthy home with the tying run from second. Williams couldn’t respond in the bottom of the ninth against Bates senior righthander Sam Maliska and the game went into extra inningss tied at 4-4.

The Bobcats picked up where they left off in the 10th: senior Rockwell Jackson led off with a single up the middle, then advanced to second on a bunt by sophomore Evan Czopek. Fox singled to right, putting runners on the corners. McCarthy then struck a double deep to left, bringing in Jackson, and a sac fly by Parker brought in Bates’ run.

Maliska came back out to pitch the bottom of the 10th and allowed a leadoff double by Adam Dulsky, but stranded Dulsky there to pick up the win, moving to 1-0 with three shutout innings of relief. Slater (2-1) was charged with the loss.

Berry had an excellent day at the plate for Bates, hitting three doubles and driving in three runs. Jackson was 2-for-5 with a double. For the Ephs, Pierce went 3-4 and scored two runs, while Jack Roberts recorded two RBIs on a 2-4 performance and Lev Schecter contributed some clutch baserunning, scoring two runs.
