CARTHAGE — A 73-year-old man is accused of strangling his wife and terrorizing her Friday, according to Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr.
The woman escaped the residence and fled to Rumford Police Department to make the report, Nichols said in a release. She told police her husband, Robert Carver, of Carthage, “was very intoxicated and had access to a loaded shotgun and a handgun which was in the bedroom,” according to the release.
The woman also told police that Carver told her that he “had a plan just in case she left.”
Robert Carver was arrested and was charged on felony aggravated assault, domestic violence terrorizing and domestic violence criminal threatening.
A conviction on an aggravated assault charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Prior to the arrest, Franklin County Deputies Kevin Hartley, Lt. David St. Laurent, Cpl. Nate Bean and Nicholas Zecher, along with Maine State Police troopers Reid Bond, Jed Malcore and Andrew Hardy, responded to a report of domestic violence at 35 Brown Drive in Carthage. They surrounded the house and contacted Robert Carver by phone and he surrendered without incident, the release stated.
Carver is being held without bail at the Franklin County jail in Farmington, a corrections officer at the jail said.
