1923 – 2015

WALES — The Rev. Dr. Gary Kilmer Price, 92, a resident of Witherell Road, Wales, died Friday, April 10, at the Hospice House in Auburn.

He was born March 28, 1923, in Swarthmore, Pa., the son of William S. and Ethal M. (Kilmer) Price. He was educated in the grammar schools of Stonehurst and Upper Darby, Pa., and was a graduate of Upper Darby High School. The Rev. Price attended college at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., receiving his Bachelor of Arts and graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1944. He received further education at the Virginia Theological Seminary (Episcopal) earning his master’s degree in 1947 and an honorary doctorate in 1973.

The Rev. Price was ordained in the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S.A, made diaconate in December 1946 and priest in June 1947. The Rev. Price held the positions of assistant minister, St. Mary’s Church, Ardmore, Pa., 1947-1949; rector of the Trinity Church, Arlington, Va., 1949-1975; and dean of the Potomac Convocation, 1954 to 1955 (Diocese of Virginia). He also served as interim rector of St. Luke’s Church, Alexandria, Va.; St. James Church, Warrenton, Va.; and Grace Church, The Plains, Va.

The Rev. Price was a member and treasurer of the Virginia Seminary Alumni Association, 1954 – 1958; member and past president of the Arlington Ministerial Association, 1955 – 1956; chairman for the Arlington, Va., Council of Churches 1960 – 1961; vice president, Council of Churches of Greater Washington, D.C., 1973; board of managers for Goodwin House Inc. retirement community, Alexandria, Va., sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, 1967 – 1969, 1975 – 1981 and 1983 – 1989; Goodwin House West chaplain, 1987 – 1989; a member of Evangelical Education Society of the Episcopal Church, where he was executive director from 1976-1979 and general secretary from 1979 – 1986. Upon retiring to Maine, he served as the chaplain of the Maine Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

He enjoyed fishing and watercolor painting. A longtime dog lover, Gary worked with Golden Retriever Rescue, providing a home for older dogs that had less chance for adoption. Gary was a philanthropist, Greek scholar and mentor to many who knew and loved him. His thirst for knowledge, sense of humor and gentle spirit will be acutely missed and forever remembered.

He is predeceased by his brothers, Albert Alexander Price III, Jean Shepherd Price and William Stanley Price Jr.; his nephew, William Gary “Billy” Price II; and dearest friends, George Stanley and Mary Louise Miller.

He is survived by his nieces, Jan Price Johnson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Terry Price Fountain of Ocean Springs, Miss., Sherry Anne Price of Pensacola, Fla., Terri Miller of Wales and Stacia Dugas of Raymond.
