NEW GLOUCESTER — Selectmen on Monday signed the 37-article warrant for the May 4 annual town meeting.

The budget proposal is $73,000 below the spending cap allowed by state law so an article asking voters to increase the property tax levy limit is not needed.

Selectmen removed a warrant request asking voters to spend $5,000 for a right of way survey of three town properties totaling 129 acres off Wharff Road. Legal access to the property is uncertain. The board agreed that more research is needed before the survey request is warranted.

Voters will be asked to appropriate $22,000 from taxation and other sources for preliminary design and engineering of a Public Works garage. The town anticipates receiving $16,000 from Cumberland County Community Development Block Grant.

The board will ask voters for authority to dispose of 13 properties taken for back taxes. Nine have houses or mobile homes and four are only land.

The warrant includes an article asking voters to authorize officials to sell 14 acres off Rice Corner Road, 35 acres off Cobbs Bridge Road and one acre on Intervale Road.

In other business, those interested in running for an elected office must submit nomination papers with 25 signatures of registered voters by 2 p.m. Friday, April 24.

Two selectmen and two RSU 15 directors are to be elected, all for three years.

Three people have taken out papers for selectman and one person for the school board. Elections are scheduled June 9.
