McCOOK, Neb. — Dura Roosevelt “Dell” Delano Jr., of McCook, Neb., died on Monday, April 6, at Hillcrest Nursing Home following a brief illness. He was 90.
He was born on Aug. 2, 1924, in Industry. His parents were Dura R. Delano Sr. and Mildred Chamberlain Delano of Rumford. He joined the Army in 1943 to help the U.S. efforts in World War II. Dell served in the 44th Infantry and saw action in France, Austria and Germany, earning a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Valor.
In 1945, he married Marilu Sellens of Hoisington, Kan., and together they had five children, Alan (Pauline) of Decatur Tenn., Robert (Martha) of Kerens Texas, Keith (Kara) of McCook, Neb., Michael of Colorado Springs, and Linda (Carolyn) of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was elected to be the District 10 Commander of the American Legion in 1961. A practical man, Dell was most proud of his family and the fun times they had together, especially on the many trips, particularly the time spent outdoors. He had no regrets.
Dell is survived by his wife; his five children; and his eight grandchildren, Travis, Beth, Rachael, Marsha, Jeff, Jake, Craig and Shea. There are 20 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
