FARMINGTON — Maine game wardens want to know who has been leaving five-gallon buckets of dirty adult diapers in the streams and woods of Farmington and Wilton.

Wardens found 16 buckets over the past two months and a person found four more of them that he told wardens he disposed of himself, Warden Kris MacCabe said Tuesday.

The bright orange buckets have The Home Depot logo on them, he said. Even though they have tags and bar codes, the buckets are impossible to track to owners because each store sells about 1,000 of them each week, MacCabe said officials at Augusta and Auburn stores said.

Buckets have been left in Temple Stream and the woods on Voter Hill Road in West Farmington, he said. Some were found on a bridge abutment.

Buckets also have been found in Wilson Stream on Pond Road in Wilton, he said.

Not only do the buckets contain waste, but the the diapers have chemicals in them, MacCabe said.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife stocks both streams with fish, he said.

Anyone who has information about the buckets is asked to call the Maine State Police barracks in Augusta at 1-800-452-4664 and ask to speak to a warden.
