1948 – 2015
BOSTON, Mass. — Gail J. Groomes, 66, died Sunday, April 5, at Massachusetts General Hospital.
She was born to Joseph M. and Evelyn A. (Rich) Groomes on April 18, 1948, in Lowell, Mass. She grew up in Livermore Falls and graduated from Livermore Falls High School, Class of 1966. She was a member of the high school band, which was part of the Maine delegation attending the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City. She graduated from Auburn Maine School of Commerce, then went to work for the John Hancock Mutual Insurance Company in their Bank Reconciliation’s and Cash Control Departments after they came to her school to recruit for positions in their company. She retired after more than 30 years.
Gail was a longtime resident of Braintree, Mass., then moved to Exeter, N.H.
After moving to Exeter, Gail commuted on the Downeaster, where she met all kinds of interesting people. She would strike up a conversation with whomever was nearby — maybe they were going to a ball game, the airport, or were a professor, commuting to work. She absolutely loved it.
Gail also loved music, playing the piano, dancing, playing tennis, reading and watching cooking shows.
She is survived by a sister, Lucille Groomes of Exeter, N.H.; and three brothers; Joseph Groomes of Livermore, Mark Groomes and companion, Monica Brewer, and Stephen Groomes and his wife, Cindy, all of Livermore Falls; an aunt, Betty Rich of Union; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by her parents.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital.
