WILTON — The town swim program will remain “where it is and as it is” at Kineowatha Park, according to a unanimous vote by the Board of Selectpersons.
Concerns about the location were expressed to the board twice by Louis Webster. He was referred to the Recreation Committee.
Webster said he met with the committee, which voted 6-0 to deny moving the program to a more user-friendly area. He wanted it moved to an area on Wilson Lake across from Bass Park, where lessons used to be held.
Webster said it is difficult for parents and grandparents to walk down to the shore at Kineowatha Park to watch a child swim. It has a steep banking that is challenging and dangerous for anyone with a disability, an injury or who is obese, he previously said.
“I’m disappointed. It is discriminatory,” he said.
He said he wants the town to consider improving access to the swim area at Kineowatha by building a paved road and a parking lot at the bottom of the bank.
“It will cost the town thousands of dollars to keep the swim program where it is,” he said.
No other complaints were received about the location, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said.
Webster cited sections of the Americans with Disabilities Act and vowed to continue his efforts to move the program.
The town moved the program to Kineowatha Park in 1977.
