1927 – 2015
Canton—Stillman “Mat” E. Matott, a resident of Canton, passed away at his home Tuesday, March 24, with his beloved wife, Carolyn, at his side.
He was born on April 14, 1927, in Concord, N.H., the son of Faber Matott and Agnes (Matthews) Matott. He grew up in the Portsmouth and Rye Beach, N.H., areas.
Mat graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1944, immediately joining the U.S. Navy, in which he served proudly from 1944-1953. He served in World War II in Iwo Jima, Okinawa (POW four months) and Nagasaki after the bombing, then on an expedition to Antarctica. He was part of the unit now called the Navy Seals.
Very shortly after his World War II service, he was called into the Korean War, where he served on a hospital ship docked in Korea where the wounded were housed until the war was over.
He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Post 153, among others. Shortly after he returned from the U.S. Navy, he started working for the Public Service of New Hampshire at the Newington, N.H., plant. He retired as superintendent in 1987 after 35 years of service. He then decided to get involved in truck driving, doing local and long hauls, moving to Maine in 1990. In 1994, after moving to Maine, he met Carolyn Doherty. He married his beloved on April 23, 1995 in Canton.
His primary interests were in sports, especially NASCAR. He and Carolyn traveled to many NASCAR races all over the country. His favorite driver was Rusty Wallace, whom he met several times.
The teams that he loved were the New York Giants, New York Yankees, Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. He really enjoyed visiting Quebec, Canada, as he was a descendent of the Iroquois, and it was the home of Carolyn’s relatives.
He liked helping on the Old Canton School Activities Board.
