LEWISTON — Safe Voices’ annual Walk/Run to End Domestic Violence will be held Sunday, May 31, at Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston, with all proceeds funding services to victims Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties.

The goal is to raise $50,000.

Registration for both events opens at 8 a.m. The 5k Run will begin at 9 a.m. and the 1mile walk will begin at 10 a.m. Strollers and well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.

Prizes will be given at different fundraising levels. Top-tier runners in each age group will also receive awards. The first 150 registrants for the 5k get a free event T-shirt. The first 100 registrants for either the walk or run who raise a minimum of $50 will also receive a T-shirt.

In 2014, Safe Voices provided 9,478 hours of advocacy to 1,660 victims of domestic violence in addition to 5,724 shelter bed nights and education to 8,252 participants. Historically, half of all murders in Maine each year are the result of domestic violence; in 2014 that rate rose to just over 60 percent.

Safe Voices works to make communities safer for everyone by providing one-on-one advocacy, court assistance, emergency shelter, and community education.
