LISBON — Fire crews and the State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating a Sunday night chimney fire that destroyed a Moody Road home.

Passersby noticed the fire at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from Lisbon fire Chief Sean Galipeau. Fire alarms alerted the occupant and an alarm system company moments later, and the occupants were able to get out safely.

The house at 120 Moody Road is listed as being owned by Patrick and Marian O’Brien.

The fire spread into the attic. Crews, hampered by Sunday’s high winds and lack of nearby fire hydrants, had the fire contained after about 90 minutes.

Tankers from Topsham, Durham and Sabattus responded to the fire, and crews from Durham and Lewiston provided station coverage.

All units were clear of the scene by 11 p.m.

In his statement, Galipeau said the cause of the fire remains undetermined, but said it appears to have been accidental. His staff and the state reviewed the site Monday morning.

The homeowner was insured and is staying with family, he wrote in the statement.
