AUGUSTA (AP) — Proposals to hike Maine’s minimum wage are getting a public hearing at the Statehouse.
The Legislature’s Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee State on Monday will hold a hearing on eight separate proposals related to raising the $7.50 per hour minimum wage. It’s been at that level since 2009.
House Speaker Mark Eves supports a raise. The North Berwick Democrat says it’s “long past due time to raise the wage,” because someone who works full-time at the minimum makes $15,600 annually, $4,190 below the federal poverty level. He says it’s vital to the state’s economy.
Republican Gov. Paul LePage vetoed a minimum wage hike measure in 2013. Rep. Larry Lockman, the ranking Republican on the committee, has already said he doesn’t see enough support for any minimum wage measure.
