1923 – 2015
FARMINGTON — Herbert E. “Gene” West, 91, of Jay quietly went home late Saturday evening, March 14, at Sandy River Living Center in Farmington.
Herbert was born Aug. 20, 1923, a son of Lawrence and Nettie Mae West. He grew up on a farm in Arkansas with his siblings, until he joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1943, where he served his country during World War II.
Upon his discharge from the military, Gene moved to Detroit, where he met the love of his life, Devona Dunn. In 1968, they moved to New Port Richey, Fla., where they made their home. Herbert was employed as a sales manager at Kmart. In 2006, they moved to Maine in order to be closer to their son, Robert.
Gene was a loving and devoted husband.
Herbert was an avid gardener with the experience of a farmer and enjoyed tending his flower and vegetable gardens. Although Gene had several interests, his true passion and love was praising the Lord. As a member of the First Apostolic Church in Wilton, he was a religious man and found strength in his faith.
He is survived by his son, Robert C. West and his wife, Ronnianne, of Jay; grandchildren, Robert L. West and his wife, Hannah, of Jay, and Michael Von West of Jay; two great-grandchildren, Aunna May West and Elisa Marie West; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Devona, in 2009; and all of his siblings.
Tributes and condolences may be shared by visiting his memorial page at www.wilesrc.com.
