LIVERMORE FALLS — The Regional School Unit 73 board on Wednesday took a final look at the proposed $18.64 million budget, which is over $240,000 less than last year because of six expected retirements.

Superintendent Kenneth Healey said replacement teachers for the six staff members will likely cost less because they would be lower on the salary scale.

The board will act on the budget Thursday, March 26. Voters in Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls will review it at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Spruce Mountain High School. The final figure will be voted on at town polls Tuesday, April 28.

The board decided Wednesday that the district will not use the rest of the $132,000 voters approved last year to keep a section of the former Livermore Falls High School open for a year.

Board member Michael Schaedler suggested the money be returned to the three towns.

“That would be an act of good faith,” he said.

Also discussed was the future of Jay Elementary School, which needs major repairs, including a new roof and a new boiler.

Healey said a special committee will likely be formed to determine the future of all district buildings.

The board also met in a closed session to discuss teacher contracts. No action was expected in public session.
