JAY — Otis Federal Credit Union was the site of the first vision screening by the Jay/Livermore Falls Lions Club in January, using the club’s new Spot Vision Screening Device.

The club launched a project to raise money to buy the machine, raising $8,000 from local businesses and individuals. The Spot Vision Screening Device provides a digital assessment of the eyes in less than five seconds.

During an exam, the device is able to detect six major eye defects: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, anisometropia, strabismus and anisocoria.

It is the aim of the Jay/Livermore Falls Lions Club to screen vision for people in the community in priority of 6 months to six years old, ages 7 to late teens, and then all others. If any eye problems are detected, people are referred to optometrists.

Nurses in local schools have expressed support of the program and the Lions Club will offer free vision screening at its Home Living Show at Spruce Mountain High School on April 18-19.

The screening at the credit union was organized in grateful recognition of the union’s generous support in helping purchase the screening device. The Lions are committed to screening employees of all contributing businesses.

Business names are posted on a bulletin board in town offices in Livermore, Livermore Falls and Jay.
