LIVERMORE FALLS — The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center will host two more book discussions as part of the “Local & Legendary: Maine in the Civil War Community Reads” series.

The first discussion is March 25 and focuses on “For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War” by James M. McPherson. The public is invited to read the book and engage in a discussion facilitated by Patrick Rael, Ph.D., professor of history at Bowdoin College.

The second community read takes place on April 8. Libby Bischof, Ph.D., associate professor of history and department chair at the University of Southern Maine, will facilitate a discussion about the book, “This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War” by Drew Gilpin Faust.

Extra copies of each book are available to borrow from the Spruce Mountain High School Library in Jay, Treat Memorial Library in Livermore Falls and the Jay-Niles Memorial Library.

Both discussions take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Farmer’s Cottage at the Norlands. Participants are invited to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for an optional tour of the 1867 Washburn Mansion, the ancestral home of Israel Washburn, Jr., Maine’s Civil War governor.
